The Eight Remedies God Gave Humanity

The scientific and spiritual foundation of Adventist medical missionary work.

Physicians should teach the people the simple remedies God has given us, in which we may trust.

What is NEWSTART

Habits, not formulas

More than 150 years ago, eight principles were described as the pillars of human health. They are not vitamins, supplements or alternative treatments. They are fundamental habits — accessible to anyone, anywhere, in any economic condition.

The difference between interventional and preventive medicine is exactly here: the first treats disease once installed; the second builds the conditions for it not to install at all. Medical missionary work begins when we teach these principles to communities that never had access to them.

Nutrition · Exercise · Water · Sunlight · Temperance · Fresh Air · Rest · Trust in God

Nutrition

Plant-based, whole-food eating without excess.

The original diet given to humanity was composed of grains, fruits, nuts and vegetables. Modern nutrition science confirms that plant-based eating patterns drastically reduce the risk of chronic disease. Teaching people to eat well is one of the most transformative acts of missionary work.

Scientific evidence

Population studies link plant-based diets to lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and several cancers.

Community application

Healthy cooking workshops, community gardens and label-reading classes.

Exercise

Regular bodily movement as preventive medicine.

The body was made to move. Inactivity is today one of the largest risk factors for global mortality. Regular exercise strengthens the heart, regulates mood and improves sleep.

Scientific evidence

Regular moderate physical activity reduces all-cause mortality and improves mental-health markers.

Community application

Walking clubs, group stretching and community movement challenges.

Water

Adequate internal hydration and external hydrotherapy.

Water is the solvent of life. Internally it sustains every bodily function. Externally, simple hydrotherapy is a therapeutic resource accessible in any community.

Scientific evidence

Adequate hydration is linked to healthy renal, cognitive and cardiovascular function.

Community application

Demonstrations of compresses, foot baths and daily-intake guidance.

Sunlight

Prudent sun exposure as a source of health.

Sunlight regulates the biological clock, synthesizes vitamin D and directly influences mood. It is a free remedy, available almost anywhere.

Scientific evidence

Vitamin D and regulated sun exposure are linked to bone and immune health.

Community application

Education on safe exposure, outdoor activity and circadian rhythm.

Temperance

Using good things in moderation and avoiding harmful ones altogether.

Temperance is not deprivation but balance. It means eliminating what destroys — tobacco, alcohol, excess — and using wisely what builds up.

Scientific evidence

Smoking and alcohol cessation is the single intervention with the greatest impact on life expectancy.

Community application

Smoking-cessation programs and support groups for habit change.

Fresh Air

Deep breathing and well-ventilated environments.

Air is the body’s first food. Breathing deeply, in clean environments close to nature, oxygenates the blood and calms the nervous system.

Scientific evidence

Air quality and conscious breathing influence pulmonary function and stress regulation.

Community application

Breathing classes, nature walks and guidance on home ventilation.

Rest

Restorative sleep, circadian rhythm and weekly rest.

Rest is not lost time — it is restoration. Sleep consolidates memory, repairs tissue and regulates hormones. Weekly rest protects the soul from burnout.

Scientific evidence

Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to metabolic, cardiovascular and mood disorders.

Community application

Sleep hygiene, talks on rest and the restorative value of the Sabbath.

Trust in God

Faith as a measurable factor of health and resilience.

Hope changes the body’s biochemistry. Purpose, gratitude and faith reduce stress and enlarge the capacity to face disease. This is the remedy that connects physical to spiritual care.

Scientific evidence

Health studies show correlation between faith, life purpose and better health outcomes.

Community application

Spiritual accompaniment, prayer groups and Bible studies on hope.
